Haikou strives to build smart inspection station to improve customs clearance efficiency
The Haikou General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection will work towards the construction of smart inspection ports, optimize inspection procedures, as well as improve the efficiency of customs clearance for inbound and outbound visitors, to echo with the new policies recently released by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).
On July 7, the head of the station detailed these efforts designed to ease visa policies for foreigners travelling to and working in the South China island province of Hainan in addition to the existing visa-free policy covering tourists from 59 countries.

Li Xue'en, head of the Haikou Entry- Exit Frontier Inspection Station said that the new policies are another upgrading for the visa-free policy of Hainan and are reflected in four aspects including expanded visa application channels that foreigners can apply for visa-free entry on their own or through organizations that invite them to Hainan; an expanded scope of visa-free entry purposes with foreigners being allowed to enter Hainan visa-free for business, visits, relative visits, medical treatment, exhibitions, sports, and other purposes; as well as longer stays according to where the visitors come from and the adjustment of the visa-free country list.

Shen Xiaoming, governor of Hainan, met with Michael Rao, president of Virginia Commonwealth University, (VCU) on July 4. They discussed further cooperation in terms of VCU's preponderant disciplines, as well as Hainan province's opportunities for talents in healthcare, tourism, automobile design, and other industries.
Shen said that the pleasant ecological environment and the China (Hainan) Pilot Free Trade Zone are among the province's advantages. The Chinese government supports Hainan's efforts to cooperate with first-tier universities across the world to attract more talents to the province. He expressed hope that the cooperation will start through more interactions between students and teachers in VCU with universities in Hainan. The governor added that there are promising opportunities for the two parties to further deepen cooperation in disciplines like rehabilitation medicine and medical social work at Chinese universities.
Rao agreed with Shen about Hainan's development prospects and industrial plans. He added that there are many opportunities for cooperation in the fields of automobile design, healthcare, medical social work, and marine economy, which will enhance the education level in Hainan's universities and speed up local economic development.
